Weber 1520 ‘Go Anywhere’ Grill

This compact gas grill comes from the highly respected Weber company and is designed for camping, on the beach and 'tailgating'. Far cheaper than most portable grills in the Weber range, you can pick one up for around $50.

The unit measures just 21 x 12.25 x 14.5 inches, and contains a single stainless steel propane burner. It feels like a much more expensive grill, the shell being made from quite thick steel and using a high quality enamel coating. The actual grilling area is a generous 160 square inches – big enough for most uses. The handles, one on either side and one on the lid, are nicely insulated, being made from glass-reinforced nylon. It includes a push-button ingnition system, making it easy to light; though a few people have found that this stops working after a while (it’s easy enough to light is with a match if this happens). The foldable legs serve to lock the lid down when you pack the grill away. The Weber 1520 uses 14.1 oz. propane cylinders which are rather small, so be sure to take some spares with you. Its the sort of cylinder more normally used in blowtorches, so you might find them in the hardware, rather than camping section of the store.

Although this grill is well made and reasonably priced, that’s not much use if it doesn’t cook well – fortunately it delivers on this front too. It uses what Weber calls a ‘flavorizer bar’ to evenly distribute heat over the surface of the grill, and it seems to work. For adding a nice smokey taste to your steaks, try tossing a few hickory chips on the flavorizer – delicious!
